The best smart home gadgets for 2025
If it feels like every piece of home tech is now "smart," you're not far off. The smart home space has grown exponentially in the past few years to include speakers, cameras, locks, lights and even kitchen appliances. There are also different voice assistants and IoT standards to consider, all of which can make it confusing (to say the least) to build your smart home ecosystem from the ground up. Allow us at Engadget to help with that. We've tested dozens of smart home gadgets over the years and continue to test the latest offerings to see which work well and are worth your money. We recommend, before you even dive in, to resist the urge to outfit your whole home in one go.

Exposing the CSI: A Systematic Investigation of CSI-based Wi-Fi Sensing Capabilities and Limitations
Cominelli, Marco, Gringoli, Francesco, Restuccia, Francesco
Thanks to the ubiquitous deployment of Wi-Fi hotspots, channel state information (CSI)-based Wi-Fi sensing can unleash game-changing applications in many fields, such as healthcare, security, and entertainment. However, despite one decade of active research on Wi-Fi sensing, most existing work only considers legacy IEEE 802.11n devices, often in particular and strictly-controlled environments. Worse yet, there is a fundamental lack of understanding of the impact on CSI-based sensing of modern Wi-Fi features, such as 160-MHz bandwidth, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmissions, and increased spectral resolution in IEEE 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6). This work aims to shed light on the impact of Wi-Fi 6 features on the sensing performance and to create a benchmark for future research on Wi-Fi sensing. To this end, we perform an extensive CSI data collection campaign involving 3 individuals, 3 environments, and 12 activities, using Wi-Fi 6 signals. An anonymized ground truth obtained through video recording accompanies our 80-GB dataset, which contains almost two hours of CSI data from three collectors. We leverage our dataset to dissect the performance of a state-of-the-art sensing framework across different environments and individuals. Our key findings suggest that (i) MIMO transmissions and higher spectral resolution might be more beneficial than larger bandwidth for sensing applications; (ii) there is a pressing need to standardize research on Wi-Fi sensing because the path towards a truly environment-independent framework is still uncertain. To ease the experiments' replicability and address the current lack of Wi-Fi 6 CSI datasets, we release our 80-GB dataset to the community.

12 Digital Transformation Trends for 2022/2023: Current Predictions You Should Know - Financesonline.com
We're past the point where utilizing the latest technology is confined to big businesses with budgets to spare. The pandemic with its accompanying mandated lockdowns and changes in the demands and requirements of customers and markets are forcing companies to adapt to digital transformation. Put bluntly, those who want to remain in business have to keep up with the latest digital transformation trends. Some of them might already be familiar because they belong to innovations that have been in development for a long time. However, most will soon be ready for application and will be taking center stage in 2021. So we will be detailing each one to help you understand how these trends can affect your business in the coming years. With innovations being developed left and right, technological evolution comes into play. New technologies radically transform our lives into something that seemed unthinkable in the old times. However, it's not just our personal lives that are being altered by modernization. Businesses are also grabbing what they can when it comes to technological advancement. With the onset of the pandemic, they have to leverage new technologies to remain relevant in the digital age.

Tech crystal ball reveals massive streaming churn - Gadget
The gaming console turns 50 this year and is proving more popular than ever. Computer chips will remain in short supply this year and into the next, although not as acutely as in 2021, and video subscription services will see 150-million subscriptions cancelled worldwide, representing a market churn of about 30%, as competition intensifies. These are some of the findings in the Deloitte Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) 2022 predictions, launched recently. The report, now in its 21st year, also foresees an explosion in the adoption of wearable health technology and apps, shows why Africa will lag the globe in the adoption of the new generation of Wi-Fi technology, Wi-Fi 6, but also why the continent can lead the way in reducing emissions from smartphones. "The report identifies which global TMT trends are most likely to impact businesses and consumers in the coming year," says Mark Joseph, TMT Leader for Deloitte Africa.

Increased connectivity: What's in store for 2022? - Help Net Security
Deloitte released a report which highlights how trends in Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) may affect businesses and consumers worldwide in 2022. The report underscores how many of these trends are being driven by the global pandemic's economic and societal shifts, resulting in an increasingly connected and multi-device world, fueling the world's need for more chips, growth in connectivity, and entertainment options. "The pandemic increased the need to maintain connections, improve productivity and experience entertainment, with accelerated adoption from both consumers and businesses alike," said Kevin Westcott, vice chair, Deloitte, U.S. TMT and global Telecommunications, Media and Entertainment (TME) practice leader. "In 2022, we foresee these behaviors continuing to grow, but amid a backdrop of challenges. Supply chain woes, increasing regulatory issues and changing media habits will be at the forefront of business leaders' minds as these challenges impact their ability to meet market demands." Many types of chips will still be in short supply during 2022, but it will be less severe than it was for most of 2021, and it will not affect all chips.

Mesh routers
Sign up for internet service with Comcast's Xfinity, and the company will get you in for $19.95 for a relatively slow 25 megabits per second, or $49.99 for "faster speeds" like 200 Mbps. But if you're having trouble with your video calls dropping out, buffering when watching Netflix or waiting for websites to load on your computer, getting faster internet speed may not be the answer. That's the admittedly biased opinion of Nick Weaver, founder of Eero, a device that connects to your home internet and spreads Wi-Fi signals more evenly throughout the various rooms. "You're welcome to pay Comcast pay more money monthly if you like, but it won't solve the problem," Weaver says. You will get faster internet if using a wired connection, "but not in the places of the home where you need it," as in devices that depend upon Wi-Fi like laptops, smart TVs, connected speakers like Amazon Echo and more.
